Literature Text

Human communication is flawed.
Yet this fact is often ignored:

That to say what you mean and
to mean what you say are concepts
as distant as night and day.

But even when both are the case.
Such are we the human race:

That whether you said what you meant or
you meant what you said matters not
till it all has been interpreted.

This interpretation may negate stipulation,
that the message dispatched is the same not detached
from the message received and the message believed
by the person for whom it is named.

And the person for whom it is named may maintain
that the meaning intended is quite unrelated to the meaning you claim;
though the words are the same, a different impression may lead to disdain...

And when all is said and done.
What is heard may be different from:

What was said, what was meant,
what was thought, and expressed.
The reaction you get, nothing like you expect.
The cascading effect we may further abet
by more talking and trying to explain what we meant
without understanding, that the difference outstanding
is one of person and not one of speech.

Meanings are based upon backgrounds and faiths
and a personal taste and a person's own
graces and theses and outlooks on life.

So though you may say what you mean.
And though you may mean what you say:

Quite freq-uent-ly, and ine-vit-ably
you are bound to encounter, a person who's bound t'a
hear your words, and mis-und-er-stand.
This poem explores some of the glaring flaws of speech as a form of communication. I had quite a lot of fun trying to read it out loud as fast as possible ;)
